Raised by his maternal grandparents on farm in Michigan   Enrolled as Performing Arts student at the American Theatre Wing of New York (his father, also an actor, graduated from the same school)   Korean War:   Leading roles on Broadway beginning in 1957 with “Great White Hope” and later “Fences”   Tony Award “Great White Hope” 1964  Tony Award “Fences” 1986   TV serials and movies: “Pairs” 1979-80  “Gabriel’s Fire” 1990-91   First cinematic movie: “Dr. Strangelove” 1964
